I Don't Want Summer To End PDF Print E-mail
Written by Diane Pottle

I did not want summer to end. I love summer vacation. This sentiment was the inspiration for this page. I first painted the page with an inexpensive set of glitter watercolors by Colorific in turquoise. The paint is nice and glittery in real life, but it does not show up in the photo. Then I took some white cardstock and rubbed a couple different shades of orange ink pads directly onto the paper. I used a large, inexpensive foam stamp and VersaMark watermark ink to stamp the star. Watermark ink can be used for tone on tone stamping (it works better on some colors of paper than others) and as a sticky surface for adhering embossing powder. I used silver tinsel embossing powder from Ranger and a heat gun to set it. I then cut a quarter circle to adhere to the upper left corner of the page. I then cut rays from various yellow patterned papers. I stuck all the paper pieces to the page with double sided tape. I used Tombow permanent mono-adhesive . I think the removable stuff is crap. I outlined all the paper pieces inside and out with my Micron . Then I used a Bic Mark It to add my sentiment.

Lollipop Tree PDF Print E-mail
Written by Diane Pottle

 Image

This page came out of my desire to create a simplified tree that looked like a lollipop. I painted the pre-gessoed page orange and let it dry. I cut a large circle from green patterned paper. I painted a straight, brown trunk on the page, and then added the paper circle on top. With black paint and a paintbrush, I wrote my statement. I added a border to the page and the paper circle. Then I scattered some little x’s all around the page with my Micron pen.

Stringy Flowers PDF Print E-mail

This page was inspired by a rubber stamp from Unity Stamp Company designed by Donna Downey . I applied a layer of gesso and let it dry. Then I painted the page in my favorite color. When the paint was dry, I tried to draw a similar image. I did not like my drawing. C’est la vie! I used Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Sand, Lily Pad, Midnight Blue, Tiger Lily, and Red Velvet to try to make my flowers look better, and I did like them better. After the mist was dried I used a Micron fine point pen to add stream of consciousness journaling about my hang-ups and what I thought this journal would be to me. I did shorten the life of my Micron writing on several of these pages. I love this page now (I just don’t look too closely at the flower tops).

Art Journal Cover PDF Print E-mail

I painted the cover with a mix of acrylic paints. I used a couple shades of blue and white. I squirted the paints directly onto the cover and mixed and then spread them out. Then I waited for it to dry. I sprayed Tattered Angels Tiger Lily Glimmer Mist onto the cover. I used a heat gun to speed drying. I was hoping for bright orange splotches, but the splotches came out dull and stained looking. I used a large, Prima foam stamp and Folk Art metallic copper paint to stamp the tree. When it was dry, I used a fine point black pen to outline parts of the tree to add emphasis. I stamped the title on newspaper. I used black StazOn ink . I filled in the outline stamp with a silver Sharpie . I stamped August onto the cover and hand wrote the year. I attached the newsprint and coated the entire cover with glossy Mod Podge . If I knew then that Mod Podge stays a bit sticky forever, I would not have used Mod Podge , but this realization came later in my journey.

My Journey PDF Print E-mail

My Journey

I entered a master’s program through Lesley University . The program I entered involved integrating the arts into the curriculum. I was excited about the program, but nervous to start something new. My cohort was laden with art teachers (not the usual case) and other highly creative people. This added to my stress. Whenever we worked on a visual art project during class, I felt I could not measure up to these talented individuals. I put a lot of pressure on myself. I did not believe I was “good enough” to create art. This struggle was all within me. They always accepted and encouraged me. I marveled at their “out of the box” type of creativity. I observed as they used various techniques and materials I was unfamiliar with. I learned from my professors and cohort members. And eventually, I learned from myself. All my learning came together with a project for the second to last class on my Lesley journey, Art and Culture in Community. We had an assignment to complete an individual creative project. We need to identify and explore a concept that was significant to us. I chose to work in visual arts. I made myself try new techniques and mediums. I would experiment. I made myself not worry about wasting supplies. I needed to follow the advice I gave to my children: that it is alright to make mistakes and we learn from mistakes. I needed to take risks. I needed to take to heart the common expressions, “Art is about the process not the product.”

I started making collages and paintings on pieces of cardboard. Then I discovered art journaling online. I was instantly hooked. I fell in love with the process of art journaling. Through art journaling, I began to feel more creative. An artistic weight lifted from my shoulders. I found inspiration. I found a way of creating and expressing my ideas that fulfilled me. Through art journaling I found me.
